Belfair has spent its 30th anniversary season telling its own history. The clubhouse calendar has been full of it since 2025: wine dinners, culinary showcases, wellness programming, family traditions, all built around the fact that the golf courses first opened in the mid-1990s and the community is marking three decades since. The general manager running this anniversary stretch has held the job just over two years, and the director of golf has held his for less than one. Both are relatively recent arrivals at the club.

A General Manager Chair That Changed Hands in 2024
Mitchell Laskowitz became Belfair's general manager in June 2024, following a search that Belfair POA President Kelly Boss described as extensive, four months long, and national in scope. Laskowitz came from Seabrook Island Club, where he served as GM and chief operating officer, and before that spent time overseeing national golf operations across dozens of private clubs. His mandate at Belfair is not narrow. He oversees both 18-hole Fazio courses, the Sports and Lifestyle Campus, clubhouse operations, and food and beverage across every dining room on the property.
The timing of his arrival matters. Belfair's own announcement of the hire noted the club would reinvest more than $22 million over the following ten years in property improvements. That is a decade-long capital commitment landing in the lap of someone who had been on the job for a matter of weeks. Members who assume a new GM means new priorities should know the bigger financial roadmap was already set before he walked in. What changes under new leadership is execution, not the plan.
Golf Got a New Boss Too
Roughly a year after Laskowitz arrived, Belfair filled its other most visible role. Tyler Bessinger, PGA, was named director of golf in the fall of 2025, coming over from Colleton River Club just up the road, with earlier stops at Secession Golf Club, Glen View Club, and The Vintage Club. He is a PGA Golf Management graduate of Ferris State University.
This is the person now responsible for both Fazio-designed courses, the Golf Learning Center, and the roughly eighty golf events Belfair runs each year through its Men's and Women's Golf Associations, each carrying about 300 members and together hosting fifteen major tournaments annually. The person running them is not.
Belfair's Recognition Bid
Belfair already holds Platinum Club of America status in the Country Club category, a designation the club has referenced in its own marketing for several cycles now. That status is not something a club can buy or campaign its way into. Platinum Clubs of America is a peer-elected ranking: general managers, chief operating officers, and club presidents vote on other clubs, an independent third party tabulates the results, and the honor has functioned this way since the program started in 1997, according to an industry breakdown of how the process actually works.
Belfair also went further and put in its entry for the more selective global list, Platinum Clubs of the World, a designation that covers only 150 golf and country clubs worldwide, as part of the 2026-2027 election cycle. In its own submission materials, the club framed the timing directly: "a story 30 years in the making." That wording places the submission in the context of the anniversary.
The Selection Criteria
The panel that decides Platinum Clubs of the World status does not just look at course rankings or clubhouse square footage. The Seven Selection Criteria that guide every vote include governance and fiscal management and the club's ability to adapt to changing times, alongside staff caliber and overall member experience. Those two criteria in particular were not abstract for Belfair's entry. A four-month national GM search, a new director of golf brought in from a nearby club, and a ten-year, $22 million reinvestment plan are exactly the kind of material a peer panel of other GMs and club presidents is trained to weigh.

- Racquet sports run on six Har-Tru clay courts and two grass courts overlooking the Colleton River, plus four pickleball courts added more recently.
- The Sports and Lifestyle Campus, a 21,000-square-foot facility that opened in the fall of 2019, houses indoor and outdoor pools, a splash pad, a dog park, and more than 6,000 square feet of fitness space.
- Dining spans five distinct rooms: the casual, pub-style 1811 Grille, the Oaks Dining Room for events up to 200 guests with a dance floor, the more intimate 20-guest Magnolia Room, the Bistro at the Sports Campus, and the Veranda overlooking both 18th greens and the river.
- More than fifty clubs and interest groups meet regularly, from photography to book clubs to wine appreciation to card games.
The amenities provide continuity even as the people overseeing them have changed.
Leadership in Belfair's 30th Year
The courses, amenities, and social calendar reflect the club's thirty-year history. The current general manager and director of golf are among the club's newer leaders. Belfair brought in new leaders in 2024 and 2025 while pursuing national recognition during its thirtieth year. For longtime members, that transition is one of the clearest signs of how the club has evolved in its 30th year.
